Hay Festival

Each year, at Hay-on-Wye, there is a festival of literature spread over the space of a couple of weeks, from the end of May till early June. During that time, the little town, which in any case has so many second-hand bookshops it's a bookworm's heaven, is crawling with writers. There are lectures and workshops throughout, after which writers stay behind to sign books. All in all, it's a great time.

Their website is here and details of a special bus service from Hereford train station to Hay can be found here. National Express do a not-too-expensive coach from London to Hereford, too. If you tent it when you get there, it's cheaper.

Broke writers beware - you'll come back laden with books!
